A healthy workforce is the key to a healthy company

The annual CBI/Pfizer "Absence and workplace health survey" has calculated that the UK economy lost 200 million working days to absence in 2011, with each employee taking 8.5 days off sick on average (almost 4% of the workforce averaged out over a year).

This equates to a cost of £17 billion each year.

The combined costs of sickness absence and "presenteeism" (showing up for work but performing below par) are estimated at over £26bn each year in the UK alone!

 

Here is a simplified example of calculating the cost of absence:

Retail Company – 5000 staff.  Just using basic salary data (i.e. excluding National Insurance, management time etc), this company’s raw absence costs look like this:

  • Staff work a 37 hour week for £6 per hour £222 per week per employee
  • Across 5000 staff, this is a weekly pay bill of £1,110,000
  • This is a monthly pay bill of £4,806,300
  • And an annual pay bill of £57,720,600

Every 1% of sickness absence will cost £577,200 each year

At the UK national average of 4% absence will cost £2,300,800 each year

Measuring costs of absence though also need to take account of; indirect costs such as costs of employing and training temporary cover staff. In addition to the indirect and direct costs mentioned, this does not allow for ‘opportunity costs’ that are harder to quantify but still important in building up a true picture of the total cost of absence. These include:

  • lost sales
  • lost customers
  • Inability to take on new contracts
  • Inability to fulfil existing contracts

MYTH: Only big companies see results...

FACT: Cost-benefits studies with the strongest research design and greatest number of participants have typically centred on large companies like Johnson& Johnson, Citibank and Procter& Gamble. There is evidence, however, that small businesses can achieve comparable results with as few as five employees actively engaged in a well-managed program.

How we got started:

From being a Director of a Manufacturing business I have dealt with effects of unhealthy lifestyles and stresses in the workplace and its effects on sickness, staff motivation and morale over many years.

I tried to tackle these issues with event days, bonuses and annual functions however I quickly learnt this was never a long term solution to an ongoing issue. I was always looking for ways to improve and reward my team for their hard work. 

I felt so passionate about health and wellness I decided to change my career path and opened a Corporate Wellness Business, to encourage businesses to trial the benefits of an employee wellness plan. 

Through skills, high quality products and the knowledge gained over many years my team and I are striving to provide businesses a solution to help reduce sickness absence by promoting a healthier life style and increased workplace wellbeing.
